FT Talks: It’s all about the data! But my site looks fine?
Our host for this event is the Financial Times. During the meetup, two ladies will share their experience in the IT industry.
Agenda:
⭐ 07:30 – 07:50 Elena Georgieva
It’s all about the data!
👩🎓 Elena is a Principal Engineer at the Financial Times and is leading the Data Team in Sofia. Elena is a software professional with focus on Data Management and Applications with broad technology experience from relational databases to Big Data solutions with 18 years of experience in the industry.
📌 Data seems to be on everyone’s lips these days. People are generating more data than ever before, with 40 zettabytes expected to be created by 2020. It is therefore extremely important how it is maintained and used in order to add real value to our lives.
➡️ In this talk, we will review the best practices for managing large volumes of data and how we at The Financial Times maintain our data efficiently and securely. We’ll also talk about real use cases of how we provide better service to our subscribers at FT.com, based on the data we have.
⭐ 08:00 – 08:30 Laura Carvaja
But my site looks fine! Common ways we break accessibility and how to avoid them
👩🎓 Laura is a Principal Engineer at the Financial Times and is the former accessibility lead for FT.com. Laura has been working in web development for the past 15 years.
📌 A great deal of what makes a website accessible is fairly straightforward to achieve, but only once we know what to look out for!
So many websites are broken for disabled users, including those who rely on assistive tech, such as screen readers and magnifiers, to navigate the web. That’s a good 10%-20% of your user base who can’t access your content or pay for your product, even though they may want to.
➡️ In this talk we will go over some common front-end (anti)patterns and how they affect accessibility while otherwise going virtually undetected. Laura will share her experience on how to avoid breaking accessibility of our websites.
We will see real user testimonials of how these affect their interaction with the web and their daily lives. Lastly, we’ll cover how to get the same results without breaking your site for disabled users, including real-life examples of how we’ve avoided these pitfalls at The Financial Times.
⭐ 08:30 – 09:00 Informal networking and drinks
